Our Story

Our small family-owned dryland vineyard in the heart of Mudgee’s premium wine growing area produces small batches of handpicked, mostly hand pressed, high quality wines. Our aim is to ‘tread lightly’, a philosophy of conservation and moderation. Minimal intervention strategies are embraced in the vineyard and winery, such as hand picking, gentle crushing, hand plunging, and basket pressing through to the use of sustainable building materials. The straw bale warehouse and cellar door are under construction, and our producer wholesaler licence currently limits sales to mail, phone and internet orders.

Robert Heslop, Winemaker

Bob began his winemaking career at Kay Bros, in McLaren Vale, South Australia, while enrolled at CSU Wagga Wagga. After returning to NSW, he completed a vintage in the Hunter Valley, and then the family moved to Mudgee, his wife Julie's home town.. They then purchased 50 acres and began planting a small vineyard with a range of grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao and Zinfandel. While teaching science at the local high school, Bob began making wine at Mansfield Wines. Since his retirement from teaching, he is following his passion of making his own handcrafted, quality wines.

Heslop Wines' philosophy of treading lightly encapulates the tradition of fine wine making and environmental care.

Our Achievements

For the 2013 Mudgee Wine Show, Heslop Wines entered the only wine they had bottled at that stage, the 2011 Touriga Nacional. This wine achieved a gold medal, the Carlo Corino Trophy for Best Red not Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, the Most Outstanding Red Wine of Show and the Champion Wine of the Show.

Latest Achievements

At the 2016 Mudgee Wine Show our 2014 Touriga Nacional was again awarded the Most Outstanding Red Wine of Show. We also received Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for other wines in our range.

The Beginnings

The Future

We are currently constructing a straw bale warehouse, adjacent to the winery and in the future plan to complete the project with an attached straw bale cellar door, overlooking our vineyard and taking in the picturesque views of the surrounding hills.

Welcome Liam Heslop Winemaker: Mr Rascal

Liam was born in McLaren Vale and raised in Mudgee. He studied Oenology at the University of Adelaide and graduated in 2005. He has extensive experience in 5 different wineries in Mudgee including vintage at Huntington Estate in 2001 and Assistant Winemaker for two years at Pieter van Gent Winery.

Since 2008 he has worked at Lowe Wines and was promoted to Winemaker in 2010 where he enjoyed the variety, excitement and challenges that a successful small winery provides. At Lowe Wines he produced a broad range of traditional and innovative wine styles for their own brands and under contract, including Certified Organic and Preservative-Free wines. Liam recently made the decision to further his winemaking dreams by joining the family business and is looking forward to helping expand the Heslop Wines and Mr Rascal ranges.

Liam travelled to Sonoma County, California in 2007 and 2008, experiencing vintages in Russian River Valley and Dry Creek Valley where he further developed his passion for Zinfandel. In 2009 he worked in Piedmonte, Italy, producing Barolo and Barbaresco.

In 2012 he gained selection to participate in the Wine Industry Future Leaders Program and was the recipient of the Trevor Drayton Scholarship.

In 2013, Liam shared the inaugural Mudgee Wine and Grape Growers’ Heroes and Icons Scholarship, receiving $2000 towards a winemaking study trip to Germany.
