Our 2016 Mr Rascal Zinfandel was handpicked and matured in French oak for 15 months. It is medium bodied showing black forest fruits and mixed spice with a balanced raisin character and oak complexity.
Treading lightly encompasses Heslop Wines’ philosophy of conservation and moderation, from hand pruning and picking in the vineyard, building sustainably with straw bales, to minimal intervention in the winemaking process to produce the highest quality, handcrafted wines.
In the mid-1980’s, Bob and Julie Heslop purchased 50 acres in Mudgee’s premium grape growing area and began establishing their vineyard, planting a range of grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao and Zinfandel. Eventually, at the end of 2010, Bob and son Ryan constructed the winery and Bob began his first vintage on the property.
With only one wine bottled in 2013 and the cellar door some years off, Bob agreed, after some encouragement, to enter it in the Mudgee Wine Show and this decision changed their timeframe drastically.
This single wine, 2011 Touriga Nacional, won a gold medal and 3 trophies, including Champion Wine of Show. We were also lucky enough to be offered support to design our label, by CCL Clear Image, the major sponsor of the Mudgee Wine Show.
Apart from growing grape vines, Bob also enjoys cultivating Hakeas, which inspired the floral design on our label. Hakeas are exclusively Australian and related to Grevilleas. They grow in all habitats, from the harsh arid inland to winter-wet swampy locations, as well as areas of snow. The design is based on Hakea Laurina or Pincushion Hakea and was drawn by Jaz Williams.
Mr Rascal 2018 Pet Nat Fiz: Pet Nat = Petillant Natural = Naturally Sparkling. An unfiltered wine, bottled during fermentation capturing the natural fizz. Handpicked and co-fermented from 93% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% White Frontignac and 2% Zinfandel. Citrus, orange blossom and honey suckle aromas, with a yeasty finish. Pour carefully or decant off the yeast. Serve chilled. Only approx. 336 bottles produced.
